What is a Steel Angle?
A steel angle is one of the most widely used steel sections, produced in the shape of the letter L. Thanks to its two perpendicular legs, it is commonly used in construction and industry for joints, reinforcement, and frame fabrication.
Types of Steel Angles
- Equal Leg Angle
- Both legs (sides) are of equal length.
- The most commonly used type in construction and industry.
- Unequal Leg Angle
- Legs have different lengths.
- Used in projects requiring special designs or asymmetric load bearing.
- Cold-formed Angle (Pressed)
- Made by bending steel sheets.
- Used in light structures and specific applications.
- Hot-rolled Angle (Fabricated)
- Produced directly by hot rolling steel billets.
- Stronger than cold-formed types.
Sizes and Standards
- Produced in sizes ranging from 20×20 mm to 200×200 mm
- Thickness: between 2 mm and 20 mm
- Common standards: DIN, ASTM, BS, ISIRI
- Dimensions and weights are listed in the Steel Section Table (Stahlbau/ISHTAL table).
Applications of Steel Angles
- Construction of columns and metal frames
- Structural joints (especially in steel frameworks)
- Trusses and industrial sheds
- Machinery and equipment manufacturing
- Fences, doors, frames, and supports
Advantages
- High strength against pressure and impact
- Suitable for both light and heavy projects
- Easy to weld and connect
- Available in a wide range of sizes and thicknesses
Disadvantages
- Relatively heavy compared to lighter profiles
- Requires anti-rust coating in humid environments
